IMPORTANT NEWS UPDATE:
Our workshop is unable to keep up with the recent glut of bikes we’ve had in. In short, we’re full, and have no more space!!
So if you have a bike that you were thinking of donating to a charity that’ll do something amazing with it, can we ask you to hang on to it for a couple of weeks. Once we get past 20th April, we should be 100% up and running again. Fingers crossed!
More updates on this page as soon as we know anything.
Normal front page information:
Recyke y’Bike is a North East charity that takes in used bikes from members of the public. We’re given over 2000 bikes a year. These second hand bikes are fixed up by our great team of qualified mechanics, and sold to fund our charitable objectives.
Our shops are in Byker, Durham and Newcastle city centre. Each stocks bikes that are particularly suited to the people in that area. They all do bike servicing & repairs, and each carries a range of accessories and spares.
By selling refurbished bikes, we raise the funds that finance our charitable objectives. We send around 500 bikes a year to development projects in Kenya and The Gambia. We also give bikes to refugees and asylum seekers in the Newcastle and Gateshead area.
This work is carried out by our team of ten staff. They’re assisted by over 40 volunteers, who come from all walks of life – from retired people who have much to give back, to long-term unemployed and people with mental health issues. We all work together and we all support each other because we all believe in what we’re doing. In addition to selling second hand bikes, we do several other things: we teach children and adults to ride bikes (you’re never too old to learn!); we can give you confidence to ride your everyday journeys; we service bikes and repair them at reasonable prices; or if you just want to fix your own bike, for a small fee you can hire our workshop space and tools. Finally, as an accredited Velotech training centre, we provide industry-standard training and workshop qualifications.
